Business aviation continues its recovery after Part 91 flying picks up steam


The overall industry finished down 16.6% in September. Traqpak forecast shows more gains in October

The tables below reflect business aircraft activity data for September 1-30, 2020 vs. September 1-30 (y/y), 2019 and September 1-30, 2020 vs. August 1-31, 2020 (m/m) respectively.

Looking ahead…TRAQPak analysts estimate there will be a 14.8% decrease in overall flight activity year over year in October 2020.

YEAR-OVER-YEAR FLIGHT ACTIVITY

TRAQPak’s review of year over year flight activity (September 2020 vs. September 2019) indicates that September 2020 recorded another decline, down 16.6%. The results by operational category were all red with Part 91 activity posting the largest yearly decrease, down 22.3% from 2019. Fractional and Part 135 activity recorded drops that were better than the overall industry, with Fractional activity declining 12.1% and Part 135 activity dropping 10.0%. The aircraft categories were also red for the month, with large jets recording the largest yearly drop, down 29.1%. Mid-size and light jets recorded declines of 17.7% & 10.4% respectively. The turboprop market reported an activity loss of 14.7%.

MONTH-OVER-MONTH FLIGHT ACTIVITY

September business aviation flight activity posted a month over month increase to finish up 1.2% from August 2020. Results by operational category were mixed for the month, with Part 91 flight activity posting the only increase, up 4.5% after all aircraft categories were positive for the month. Part 135 activity finished with a decrease of 1.6%, while Fractional activity fell 1.7%. The aircraft categories were mostly positive for the month, with large jets posting the only monthly decrease, down 2.4% from August. Turboprops posted the largest increase for the month, up 2.7%, followed by lights jets, which rose 1.8%. Mid-size jets were relatively flat, up 0.7%, after Fractional and Part 135 activity declined from August.
